Rust

Written 2026-10-27 from the project's own docs and code.

These pages are notes on Rust as it is used in two of the projects on this wiki: Fboard, a fingerboarding game, and The Crawl, a multiplayer dungeon game. They aren't a Rust tutorial. Each page describes what those two codebases actually do and the lessons their own handoff notes record.

Both projects use Rust for everything they've built so far: game logic, the game client, and in The Crawl's case the server module too. The Crawl's tech-stack decision is recorded in one line: "Rust all the way." Its design notes say what that buys: one language end to end, so client, server and simulation can share one rules crate and the same types.

Game-engine material (Bevy) has its own section.

Pages

  • Workspaces and crates: how both projects split their code into a Cargo workspace of small crates, and why the core logic crates have no engine in them.
  • Gotchas: problems that actually came up, from a reserved keyword in edition 2024 to floating-point determinism.
  • Testing and verification: golden-file parity tests, replay hashes, rule-named tests and deliberately breaking code to prove a test can fail.
